FORD WORK SOLUTIONS DELIVERS COLLECTION OF CAPABILITIES WITH MINIMAL DISTRACTION
Customers increasingly are using telematics devices while driving their vehicles, and most available data suggests this trend will continue, regardless of legislation and public education to limit driver distraction from in-vehicle telematics. The challenge for automakers, then, is to provide a better, more convenient, less distracting driving experience, while taking full advantage of the technologies and services customers expect to have access to in their vehicle.

This Day in History: Easter Rebellion begins
April 24: General Interest
1916 : Easter Rebellion begins
On this day in 1916, on Easter Monday in Dublin, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, a secret organization of Irish nationalists led by Patrick Pearse, launches the so-called Easter Rebellion, an armed uprising against British rule. Assisted by militant Irish socialists under James Connolly, Pearse and his fellow Republicans rioted and attacked British provincial government headquarters across Dublin and seized the Irish capital’s General Post Office. Following these successes, they proclaimed the independence of Ireland, which had been under the repressive thumb of the United Kingdom for centuries, and by the next morning were in control of much of the city. Later that day, however, British authorities launched a counteroffensive, and by April 29 the uprising had been crushed. Nevertheless, the Easter Rebellion is considered a significant marker on the road to establishing an independent Irish republic.

Alexandre Desplat is Scoring Twilight Saga: New Moon?!
Posted: 24 Apr 2009 09:15 AM PDT
Some heartbreaking news today. French composer Alexandre Desplat will be scoring The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The news was confirmed by the Upcoming Film Scores blog, where they say that Desplat has a working relationship with director Chris Weitz. Why is this heartbreaking? Because Desplat is one of the finest composers working today and I was hoping there wouldn’t be anything that would actually interest me in New Moon. Desplat will be replacing Carter Burwell, who provided the score for the first Twilight last year. I actually liked Burwell’s score, it was probably the best part of that entire movie.
Desplat received Oscar nominations for his scores to The Queen and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button most recently. He has also composed the scores for Stephen Gaghan’s Syriana, John Curran’s The Painted Veil, Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution, and Chris Weitz’s The Golden Compass. He is currently working on Julie & Julia, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life. He does some incredible work and I’ve loved most of his scores. It’ll be interesting to see how much work Desplat does for New Moon, considering Twilight featured mostly pop songs and only the occasional orchestral score (with also Bella’s Lullaby).

DIRECTOR’S REPORT What a week! As we close in on the final hours of 24’s seventh day, surprises are dropping like bombs. The stunning turn of events surrounding Tony Almeida showing his hand (over the mouth and nose of FBI agent Larry Moss) shook the season like a nuclear warhead as the writing team behind 24 reminded us, once again, that anything can happen on their watch. As fans already look ahead to Day 8 (in the Big Apple – see news below), the seventh season is shaping up to be the most intense yet. If you haven’t heard, 24 is back in a big way, and not even a neurotoxin, double-crossing agents or terrorists – international or domestic – can stop the re-energized franchise. Mike Stokes, |

DIRECTOR’S REPORT There are a lot of animated series I love, from the Saturday mornings of my youth spent watching Hong Kong Phooey to after-school doses of the cat/mouse violence on Tom & Jerry to watching Beavis and Butt-head after a long night of partying in college. But if any of the voice actors from those shows were to jump out from behind a tree and stab me in the neck with a pencil, I would still have no idea who they were (except for maybe Scatman “Hong Kong Phooey” Crothers – dude was in The Shining). Yet Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has achieved rock-star status from behind the scenes. How did this happen? Is it the big contract? The Hulu commercial? I think it’s because he doesn’t apologize for being funny, and that’s a rare thing in our politically correct era. While Family Guy has apparently offended every sensitive special interest group in existence, I haven’t heard MacFarlane make the obligatory/phony apology for “offensive” content. He actually seems to care more about making a funny show than making an “appropriate” show and pleasing those who have nothing better to do than complain. And for that he deserves rock-star treatment. Mike Stokes, |

Myth Busters: Can Certain Foods Affect Certain Body Parts?

| Myth Busters: Can Certain Foods Affect Certain Body Parts?
The big answer to this question is yes, says registered dietician Ashley Koff. But the answer is also no. Huh? Well, Koff says that certain nutrients absolutely help certain body functions: Fruits and veggies make our eyes healthier, and proteins help build muscle. But when it comes to weight loss, excess calories almost always go to where the fat cells are—regardless of what foods you’re eating. For women, that means hips, thighs and butt. And for the men, fat will most likely collect in the belly. Of course, there are exceptions: Koff adds that if you have a digestion problem, then you might be more likely to gain abdomen fat. So, make sure to get the nutrients you need. Check out NeverSayDiet’s Facebook page for up-to-date information on our latest and greatest healthy living tips. Do you tweet? “Mr. Cranky Rates the Movies!”
Mr. Cranky - |
Posted: 23 Apr 2009 06:39 AM PDT
One day in the not too decent past, an executive at DreamWorks SKG said to another executive, ‘hey – wouldn’t it be awesome if we made a movie about a guy without any man friends – but then he gets married and he needs to find a best man, so he has to go on all these man-dates? You know, we’ll throw in some touchy-feely stuff about men getting in touch with their emotions, some relationship discord, oh and a guy with no apparent means of support who turns out the be the answer to his prayers!’
If at that moment, the second executive had shot the first executive in the face and then dissolved his body in a tub full of lye, the world would be a better place. Unfortunately he didn’t – or if he did, it wasn’t in time to stop I Love You, Man from being filmed and released – and ultimately, that’s all that matters.
I don’t understand Hollywood’s obsession with loneliness. It seems like every season we get at least 5 different flicks zeroing in on just how awful it is to not have a best friend of 20 years / wife / girlfriend / boyfriend / sympathetic German shepherd / father figure / etc. Usually, these movies are designed to prey on that biologically imprinted fear that women have of instantly turning into spinsters when the clock strikes midnight on their 30th birthday. However, apparently having mined that vein of comedic ore for all it is worth, the studios have turned their attentions to the male of the species.
The trouble is, the emotional range of men on film in a comedy is about as extensive as my collection of DVD’s that don’t contain girls going wild – that is to say, almost non-existent. Paul Rudd’s character, who fits the scenario pitched by the studio exec in the opening paragraph, never really convinces us that he actually cares about only being friends with women. If the protagonist doesn’t actually buy into the premise of the film, then how the hell is the audience supposed to come along for the ride?
In fact, Rudd manages to remain almost completely anonymous throughout the entire picture, with aspects of his personality only emerging as a particular scene calls for them. Sure, they load him with cutsie insecurities and the inability to communicate in a macho fashion, but by the end of the movie it’s easy to see why men avoid him like he’s Richard Simmons at a pool party.
Just like John C. Reilly, if Rudd isn’t paired with a strong male lead – ok, if Will Ferrell isn’t in the movie – he sucks. Don’t be fooled into thinking that Jason Segel is that guy, because he isn’t, and Andy Samberg is only in the movie long enough to collect his paycheck and shame the director for giving him any funny lines. It boils down to this. You can give me as much projectile vomit and funny billboards as you want, but you can’t make me emotionally connect with Rudd, the human dial tone, and you can’t make me love this shitty movie.
