Nokia Developer Summit 2009 Kicks Off
A sold-out audience from nearly 40 countries has gathered in Monaco for the first-ever Nokia Developer Summit. The event includes keynote addresses by visionaries from Nokia, Symbian Foundation, MySpace, and IDC. Detail sessions cover technical and business topics. Developers participate in one-on-one sessions with technical experts, and everyone gets a chance to sample the latest technology and applications in the experience lounge and hands-on lab.

If you cannot join us at this year’s Nokia Developer Summit, don’t worry. There are many ways for you to participate without flying to Monaco:

Hackathon Begins
The showdown begins! An elite group of developers, hand-picked from the Forum Nokia global community, are on-site and ready to compete face-to-face at the Nokia N97 24-hour Hackathon. Their task is to build apps live and against the clock over a 24-hour period — in full view of Summit delegates. The apps being built are the 10 strongest ideas from a pool of over a thousand entries submitted by consumers all over the world.

At the end of the 24-hour Hackathon the apps will go before a judging panel of experts from Forum Nokia and Nokia’s N97 team, who will choose the winning application. The winning designer will receive a Nokia N97 multimedia device pre-loaded with his or her app, to be awarded at the launch of the Nokia N97 device. This way the winner will know that he or she has one of the first officially released Nokia N97 devices.

The winning application will also be awarded premium spotlight status on the main page of the new Nokia Ovi Store, which is opening in May. It will be free to download in Australia, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Russia, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The apps which come in second and third at the Hackathon judging panel will also get spotlight placement on the site.

Deep Diving at Nokia Developer Summit 2009
Each day of the Nokia Devleoper Summit includes a technology stream to allow developers to dive deep into the technologies that matter most. Tuesday’s stream focuses on Mobilising the Internet. The stream is chaired by Mikko Terho, Vice President and Nokia Fellow, and includes practical presentations by developers who have been through it all. Luca Passani, CEO and Founder of WURFL-Pro, discusses Optimizing Web Services for Mobile Browsers; Miha Lesjak, CEO of Inova IT, talks about Taking your Web Development Skills to Mobile; Andrew Shorten, Platform Evangelist with Adobe, lays out the Flash Platform Roadmap; and Ilicco Elia, Consumer Mobile Products Manager at Thomson Reuters, discusses Fast and Furious Flash Application Development.

Wednesday’s technology stream looks into cross-platform development techniques under the direction of Benoit Schillings, Chief Technologist, Qt Software, Nokia. Benoit is joined by Forum Nokia Champion Mark Wilcox and a team of Nokia technologists and program managers to discuss cross-platform development from desktop to the S60 and maemo™ platforms.

Doing Business at Nokia Developer Summit 2009
As the Ovi Store prepares to launch, presentations on business and distribution at Nokia Developer Summit will be well attended. The first keynote of the Summit is Developing for the Era of Social Location, presented by Tero Ojanperä, Executive Vice President, Services, Nokia. Tero will present some of the key opportunities for Nokia developers in this new experience segment. Four of the top 10 apps submitted for the Hackathon include a social location aspect. In addition to sessions devoted to the Ovi Store, attendees will learn about Partnerships and Application Pre-loads on Nokia devices, Monetizing Applications through Advertising, Partnering and Acquisition Strategy for Mobile Developers, VC Funding Opportunities for Nokia Developers, and more.
